The reason that I created this scholarship is to give back to the Highway family and OCN community. I will forever be grateful for the love and support that I received throughout my educational journey.
Reaching the level of education required to earn my doctoral in education was not an easy task. I faced many challenges and barriers along the way. Having the support of OCN through sponsorship made every hurdle easier to overcome.
As an OCN member who has always lived off reserve I had to be creative in finding a way which would allow me to give back in a way that would have an impact. Establishing a scholarship which bears the name of my grandparents was the best way to honour both them and my family.
The choice to create a scholarship specific to sponsored students who are in an accredited program means that students who have moved away from home and the OCN community have another opportunity to be recognized for their efforts in post secondary.
Awarding this scholarship to a post secondary student in September 2024 is the first step of this scholarship plan. In June 2025 the second part of this scholarship will be awarded to one high school graduate from OCN. The high school award will be done through a referral for the award, instead of an application process. Referrals will open in May 2025.
